Neil is an English actor best known for his role as 'Ryan Malloy' on the BBC1 soap 'EastEnders'. With his formative years on Merseyside behind him, he ventured south to train at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London. Neil further perfected his craft whilst treading the boards in various regional stage productions. He progressed into London's West End, appearing in the musicals 'The Sound of Music' and 'Follies'. At the same time a burgeoning television career led to appearances in, amongst others, 'Casualty' and 'Doctor Who'. McDermott's big break came in 2009 when he landed the part of 'Ryan'.
Neil proposed to his wife-to-be, Michelle, at the Eiffel Tower. The couple became a family when their daughter, Arabella Betsy, was born on the 9th January, 2011. Neil said that he was "absolutely delighted" by the new arrival. However, the couples joy was soon overshadowed by tabloid tales of infidelity. On the 27th February, 2011, the 'Sunday Mirror' revealed that McDermott had cheated on his wife by having a one-night stand with a sixteen-year-old girl. In an attempt to save his marriage, he issued the following statement:
"I am so sorry: To my wife, daughter and our family for this betrayal. I love my wife and family dearly and I'm distraught that my life is now in tatters due to a stupid mistake. I've no excuse for my actions but I had no idea the girl wasn't over 18 as we met in a nightclub. Either way, I've caused heartache to those I love most which I deeply regret. This was a one-off incident but I've let myself down as well as my wife and everyone who knows me. Now I just need privacy and time to do all I can to rebuild my family."
After a three-month separation, Michelle decided to give Neil a second chance for the sake of their family.

Trailed as being a cagey character with a dark past, viewers were first introduced to 'Ryan' on the 28th April, 2009. In typical soap opera fashion, life was far from uneventful for the character. In June 2011, the BBC announced that Neil would be leaving 'EastEnders' by mutual consent. He subsequently made his exit from the show on the 26th August, 2011.
